Human Resources Policies

Human Resources policies are essential to creating clarity and alignment throughout small, medium and large employers. First, Human Resources policies must be fully compliant with employment laws and regulations. Second, Human Resources policies must be aligned with the objectives and culture of the employer.

I will review and update Human Resources policies to accomplish these two requirements. I will develop a deep understanding of a client’s operations and culture prior to conducting Human Resources policies reviews and updates. As required, I will consult with an employment lawyer to insure compliance with appropriate employment laws and regulations. Engaging my service first will be more cost effective for clients than engaging a legal counsel to undertake the entire process.

I will work with clients to develop and deliver communications to employees about the revised Human Resources policies. I will work with clients to define and communicate the special responsibilities of managers and leaders.

I have specific recent expertise in reviewing and updating harassment and discrimination policies.

Harassment investigations

Harassment investigations

Allegations of harassment and discrimination must be dealt with promptly, thoroughly and fairly. This is essential in protecting the employer from liability.

Prompt, thorough and fair investigations can also form a key element in creating and maintaining a positive workplace.

I will work with clients to first determine if the allegations require a formal investigation by determining if their is a potential breach of the client’s policies and / or the law.

I will conduct investigations promptly, thoroughly and fairly. I will document the investigation, findings and recommendations.

I will support client management in determining appropriate resolutions to complaints and will support appropriate communications to the parties involved.

Change is the only constant that every employer, small, medium and large, can count on.

Before any decisions are made about change, employers can facilitate employee acceptance and engagement by developing and implementing a strategic employee communications plan (or long-game communications plan).

The objectives of a strategic employee communications plan is to provide employees with a useful understanding of the internal and external forces influencing their employment.

I will support clients in the development and implementation of a strategic employee communications plan that clearly communicates internal and external forces influencing the business, reflects the norms of communication in the organization and utilizes appropriate modes of communication.

Terminations

Terminations

Terminating someone’s employment may be the most difficult task ever undertaken by a manager. I have direct experience as a manager, having terminated employees. I have also coached and supported numerous managers through this process.

In Canada, every termination of employment should only be decided and implemented after appropriate legal counsel.

I will coach and support managers through every step of the process to insure legal compliance (engaging employment counsel as required), developing required communications, planning location and timing of the termination message, delivering the termination message and developing appropriate documentation.

It is vital that Human Resources be engaged as part of the team planning and conducting a divestment.

I will participate in the planning and conduct of divestment negotiations. The objectives for the client’s organization are to minimize severance costs by negotiating certain protections of employment and working conditions, facilitate a safe and efficient transition and send a positive message to employees who remain with the employer.

I will support employee communications at every stage of the process from initial messages up to and including employee termination packages. Appropriate employee communications are essential to help minimize the stress that employees may feel and which can lead to inattention and safety risks.

I will participate in the planning and conduct of closure. The objectives for the client’s organization are to facilitate a safe and efficient closure and send a positive message to employees who remain with the employer.

Appropriate employee communications are essential to help minimize the stress that employees may feel. Stress can lead to inattention and safety risks.

Coaching Managers

Coaching Managers

High performing managers and leaders are essential to the success of any small, medium or large employer.

I will monitor the performance of identified key contributors as leaders and managers of people. I will provide timely and useful feedback with the aim of helping the key contributor identify strengths and areas for improvement versus the skills required by the client employer.

I will work with the client employer and the key contributor to formulate and implement an appropriate development plan.

Mentoring

Mentoring

Mentoring works. Mentoring has been proven to accelerate the development of new hires and aid in employee retention. The responsibility for mentoring also provides more senior employees with a positive experience and validation.

I will develop, implement and communicate a mentoring program that supports clients business objectives and fits with operational realities. My service will include initial employee communications, pairing new hires with senior employees, a workshop on process and responsibilities, mid-process check-ins and assessments. I will also provide periodic feedback reports to management.
